Close to 300,000 sepoy were crucial in securing the subcontinent of India for the British East India Company, but there was widespread mutiny amongst the sepoy of the Bengal Army in the Indian Rebellion of 1857 after it was alleged that the new rifles being issued to them used animal fat to grease the casings.
